In 17 century Europeans went to a city called Ijebu ode where they exchange brass bracelets for slavery and ivory. Commence with Europeans expanded in the seventeenth and eighteenth century as the new world demand more slavery. Among Yoruba marriage is prohibited among people who can trace a biological relationship. socially the children are more close to mothers because mothers indulge their children whereas fathers are more remote and strict. Children over the age of two years are physically punished to regulate their behavior.
In relation to the topic of religion, Yoruba religious systems have been a pantheon of deities who underpin an extensive system of cults and rituals which explain predictions and control of mystical powers. After some time Christianity was introduced from the south while Islam was introduced from the north. Another factor that has a lot of value in Yoruba people is sacrifice. According to Yoruba Sacrifice Practice by Awolalu, sacrifices are deeply rooted and practiced by Yoruba because it's the core of worship in the traditional religion of the people.
Positive sacrifice is believed that life should be preserved and that its preservation and continuation depend upon the favor of beings, which has the power to sustain and destroy it. They depend on these spiritual powers for material property, for good health, increase in a crop, increase in cattle, and increase in the family. And it's believed that when a man does this regularly he will have favor with supernatural beings.

This is a cool topic to study, I have never heard of a "positive sacrifice". What exactly are they "sacrificing"?
ReplyDeleteI have the same question as Sam actually. I'm curious as to what they are sacrificing exactly in retur for good fortune.
